Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery takes part in hip replacement research

March 5, 2025

Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery in Columbia, SC, announced their participation in an FDA clinical study for the Polymotion Hip Resurfacing implant, making theirs the first practice in the United States to contribute to this research.

The Polymotion Hip Resurfacing device is a replacement implant that will be used in men and women under age 65 as a part of the clinical study.

Drs. Thomas Gross and Coleman Fowble

Drs. Coleman Fowble and Thomas Gross recently implanted the first Polymotion Hip Resurfacing devices in the United States as part of this FDA study. Drs. Fowble and Gross, partners at Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery, are world-wide leaders in hip resurfacing, an operation that retains more of a patient’s original bone. “Previously, some patients have shied away from hip resurfacing, fearful of metal wear debris. The Polymotion implant has a metal/plastic bearing rather than a metal/metal bearing,” Dr. Gross said. “Women in particular have often been denied metal-on-metal hip resurfacing operation because they may be more sensitive to metal wear debris. We are encouraged that more patients may now have an alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery.”

AnnMargaret McCraw, CEO at Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery commented “Our participation in this clinical study highlights our commitment to this area of practice. We thank Drs. Gross and Fowble for their expertise, industry leadership, and commitment to rigorously pursue this technology that may yield improved quality of life for our patients.”

In time, Polymotion may be available globally as a hip resurfacing device. Visit www.jointmedica.com/thepolymotionhr for more information on the Polymotion device.
