COLUMBIA, SC – A young man’s plan for a musical education will be aided by one of 10 national scholarships to families of Unum employees.

Theodore Nagelvoort plans to attend Columbus State University in Columbus, Ga., where he will study music. He is the son of Adam Nagelvoort, a senior infrastructure engineer in Columbia for Colonial Life, a business unit of Unum.

Nagelvoort’s accomplishments include a place in the Southeast Trombone Symposium earlier this summer and placing as a finalist during the Eastern Trombone Workshop in Washington, D.C.

This year’s 10 scholarship winners were chosen from 77 applicants nationwide and boast a combined GPA of 3.93. The scholarships help pay for tuition, room and board, books, and lab fees and equipment. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $3,000 and are renewable for up to three years.

Since 1991, the Unum scholarship program has donated more than $1.4 million to help 227 children of Unum employees further their education. Each scholarship is based on a number of factors, including academic performance, school and community involvement and financial need.
