Mignon Clyburn, FCC Commissioner, to speak at Advocacy Awards Luncheon

February 20, 2017

The MBDA Business Center – Columbia, SC announced that The Honorable Mignon Clyburn, a Commissioner at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will be the keynote speaker at its 2017 Advocacy Awards Luncheon. Clyburn, a South Carolina native, is expected to bring a message about the importance of internet access for all families regardless of income and opportunities for minority-owned businesses in the telecommunications industry. The event will take place on March 10, 2017 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, located at 1101 Lincoln Street in Columbia.

Camille Shaw, Director of the Center, says, “We are ecstatic to have Commissioner Clyburn speak to our small and minority business owners. As she is a South Carolinian, a former minority business owner, a longtime champion of consumers and a defender of the public interest, I’m sure our audience would appreciate her insights.”

Also during the luncheon, Delores DaCosta, former Congressional Staff for SC Senator Tim Scott, and Sophia Vickers, Finance Manager for DESA, Inc. will be honored for their long-time advocacy for minority businesses. The Lynn Family, which has been successful business-owners for four generation, will be honored with a Legacy Award.

The Advocacy Awards Luncheon is the midday segment of the 2017 SB Connect, an economic outlook summit for South Carolina’s small and minority-owned businesses. It will bring together speakers from federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as representatives from the private sector who will provide information on 2017/2018 procurement opportunities to business owners. Speakers and panelists include representatives from The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development (USDA), South Carolina Department of Transportation SCDOT), Columbia Metropolitan Airport, and MB Kahn.
