Moore Offers Sports Physicals To Student Athletes

April 13, 2015

About 1,000 students participated in 2014

COLUMBIA – Area student athletes will be able to get physicals thanks to Moore Center for Orthopedics’ annual Physical Day Saturday, April 18. The physicals will be available 8:00 am — 12:30 pm at Moore’s Northeast office at 114 Gateway Corporate Blvd adjacent to Providence Orthopedic Hospital.

Moore provides the physicals to the schools at no charge and the schools set fees to raise money for their athletic programs.

Wendell Holmes, Jr., M.D., head of Moore’s Sports Medicine specialty, said, “Every student wishing to participate in school athletics must have a physical. This is an excellent and convenient opportunity to see some of the best medical practitioners in Columbia who specialize in the treatment and prevention of sports injuries. We encourage parents to bring their athletes and take advantage of this great opportunity.”

Moore, who provides athletic trainers at 13 area schools, held its first Physical Day in 2006. About 1,000 students from more than 30 schools received physicals in 2014.

On hand will be more than 80 Moore Center physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers and other staff. Also participating will be additional primary care practitioners who will conduct the physical exams. Moore’s orthopedic surgeons, as well as a cardiologist, will be available for consultations.

Athletes interested in a physical should talk to the athletic trainer at their school.

Moore Center for Orthopedics

Moore Center for Orthopedics was founded in 1928 by Dr. Austin T. Moore who revolutionized orthopedic treatment with the world’s first hip replacement surgery using a prosthesis he invented. That commitment to incorporate the latest medical innovations and technologies continues in the Moore practice today as its surgeons still perform many firsts in the world of orthopedic surgery. The practice is also one of South Carolina’s top orthopedic research facilities. Moore Center for Orthopedics serves South Carolina through 10 locations, including an ambulatory surgery center, adult and children rehabilitation facilities, an imaging center, and Providence Orthopedic Hospital.
