Moore School’s Center for Executive Succession recognizes retired Aetna CEO with leadership award

The University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business will present the Center for Executive Succession’s 2019 Leadership Legacy Award to former Aetna Inc. chairman and CEO, Ronald A. Williams. Williams will accept the award and present a keynote at a Nov. 4 event in the Moore School’s W.W. “Hootie” Johnson Performance Hall from 6-7 p.m.
Williams was named president of Aetna in 2002; he served as the board’s chairman and CEO from 2002-2011. Under Williams’ leadership, Aetna was named Fortune’s most admired company in the Health Care: Insurance and Managed Care category for three consecutive years. The company’s market capitalization grew to $15.3 billion in 2011 from $4.7 billion in 2001. The company ranked 77th in 2011 on the Fortune 100 list.
Currently chairman and CEO of RW2 Enterprises, LLC, Williams counsels C-Suite executives on strategy and transformational leadership; he is a director of American Express, The Boeing Company and Johnson & Johnson. He is also the bestselling author of “Learning to Lead: The Journey to Leading Yourself, Leading Others, and Leading an Organization,” which features leadership advice from Williams’ own experience as well as the experiences of some of America’s leading CEOs through engaging stories and practical steps for values-based leadership and transformational change.
His selection was primarily based on his ongoing commitment to help future leaders with their personal development. As part of his award, the Center for Executive Succession will donate $10,000 to the charity of Williams’ choosing.
