More Than Sandwiches: Sully’s Steamers Applauded for Deep Investment in Special Needs Community
June 29, 2026While downtown Simpsonville is home to many thriving local businesses, a popular Main Street eatery is capturing the community’s heart for its extraordinary commitment to inclusivity and neurodiverse empowerment.
Sully’s Steamers has established itself as a true sanctuary of support for individuals with developmental disabilities.
A Welcome with Open Arms
The restaurant’s culture of inclusion is deeply felt by local families, exemplified by the story of a young employee named Bryan. Well-known to locals as the face of “Bryan’s Brownies” at the Simpsonville Farmers Market, Bryan—who has Down syndrome and autism—was hired by Sully’s Steamers roughly two and a half years ago.
From his very first day, the staff welcomed him completely, even taking the unique step of inviting his Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapist to work alongside him behind the counter. This collaborative setup ensured Bryan could learn the nuances of the job in a structured, successful environment.
The strategy has paid off immensely. Today, Bryan has achieved milestone growth, and his family anticipates he will be ready to transition to completely independent work within the next year.
Club Smile Takes Over the Counter
The shop’s advocacy was on display yet again recently when Sully’s Steamers opened its doors to Club Smile for the second time. Run by the nonprofit speech clinic AID-L (Advanced Institute for Development and Learning), Club Smile serves as a vital social and skill-building group tailored for older teens and young adults with developmental disabilities.
During the special event, participants spent the day fully immersed in the restaurant’s daily operations. The young adults stepped up to:
-
Hand-craft and serve the shop’s signature steamed bagel sandwiches.
-
Restock inventory and chip displays.
-
Interact directly with customers at the counter.
The hands-on takeover provided a powerful framework for the participants to build vocational confidence, practice real-world communication, and form new friendships. According to onlookers, the impact was mutual, with the regular Sully’s staff visibly enjoying every minute of the collaboration.
As local patrons continue to look for businesses to support in the Upstate, community advocates note that the owners and family behind Sully’s Steamers are proving that true business success extends far beyond the kitchen—it lies in intentionally building a place where every individual has a chance to rise.
