Morning Visitor Puts on a Hunt Demonstration at Conestee Nature Preserve
May 6, 2026Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts at the Conestee Nature Preserve were treated to a rare, up-close wildlife display early Monday morning.
Just before 7:00 a.m., local photographer Karl Trump captured a series of striking images showing a barred owl in mid-flight as it hunted for prey near the preserve’s wetlands. The owl reportedly remained in the active area for roughly 30 minutes, giving early-morning visitors a front-row seat to its hunting techniques.
A Local Haven for Birds of Prey
The sighting highlights the rich biodiversity of the Conestee Nature Preserve, a 400-acre wildlife sanctuary located along the Reedy River just south of downtown Greenville. Designated as an “Important Bird Area of Global Significance” by the National Audubon Society, the preserve’s bottomland forests, wetlands, and sloughs serve as a crucial habitat for over 220 bird species, including several species of resident owls.
According to local naturalists, barred owls (Strix varia) are highly active hunters in these bottomland environments. While they are famously known for their distinctive “Who cooks for you?” call, they are also highly efficient predators, relying on exceptionally sharp hearing and silent flight feathers to ambush small mammals, frogs, and crawfish.
Tips for Ethical Wildlife Viewing
While observing birds of prey in their natural habitat is a thrilling experience, conservationists remind visitors to follow ethical viewing guidelines:
-
Keep a Respectful Distance: Use a zoom lens or binoculars to observe wildlife without interrupting their natural hunting or nesting behaviors.
-
Stay on Designated Trails: Remaining on the preserve’s 13 miles of established paths and boardwalks helps protect delicate undergrowth and nesting areas.
-
Avoid Flash Photography: Artificial flashes can disrupt an owl’s highly sensitive vision, especially during the low-light hours of dawn and dusk.
For local residents looking to spot native raptors and other wildlife, Conestee Nature Preserve is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
