American College of Transportation Attorneys created as legal resource for industry

GREENVILLE, SC – May 12, 2010 – Motor carrier professionals seeking information and assistance in dealing with regulatory issues, federal safety standards and claims issues have a new legal resource.  The American College of Transportation Attorneys (ACTA), a nonprofit association consisting transportation defense attorneys, has been developed to assist trucking industry professionals.

According to Rob Moseley, an ACTA member and partner with Greenville, S.C. law firm Smith Moore Leatherwood, the association – which consists of 25 defense attorneys located throughout the United States – was formed in an effort to aid motor carriers gain a better understanding, and legal assistance, in dealing with the multitude of issues that affect the industry on a regular basis.  “This is not another way to market legal services to the transportation industry,” says Moseley.  “Instead, we are looking at this association as a way to give back to the industry that supports us.”

The ACTA plans to provide in depth analysis of issues affecting the industry and updates through the distribution of confidential white papers to industry professionals and in house legal counsel.  In addition, the association will conduct periodic round table meetings aimed a facilitating discussions of trucking casualty and business issues.

Moseley says that ACTA members will be available to respond to immediate industry issues via e-mail or telephone conference.  Meanwhile, the attorneys will also work with motor carriers to address regulatory issues and serve as a legal resource to improve Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.  “We hope that carriers will treat the ACTA as a vital resource for their companies and use our collective industry insight to address any significant issues they might have,” says Moseley.
