For sixth consecutive year, MUSC recognized with national diversity award

Recently, INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education, announced its 2022 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award recipients. For the sixth year in a row, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) was among the HEED Award recipients.

MUSC was also named a Diversity Champion for the fifth consecutive year. Diversity Champions rank in the top tier of HEED Award recipients. These institutions exemplify an unyielding commitment to diversity and inclusion throughout their campus communities, infusing diversity, equity and inclusion across academic programs and at the highest administrative levels. Known for visionary leadership, Diversity Champions are institutions that serve as role models and set the standard for thousands of other U.S. college campuses striving for inclusive excellence.

“MUSC is proud to be honored with the 2022 distinction of the HEED award,” said chief equity officer Willette Burnham-Williams, Ph.D. “This award represents the work and impact of our institution’s sustained and compassionate commitment to becoming the preeminent model for DEI among academic health science centers.”

The annual Health Professions HEED Award – a national honor recognizing U.S. health colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion – comes with national recognition from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. The 2022 list of Top Colleges for Diversity features 64 other recipients. MUSC and all of the other 2022 awardees will be featured in the December issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

“The Health Professions HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees – and best practices for both – continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a Health Professions HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for schools where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus.”
