MUSC names Dr. Kathleen Brady vice president for research

CHARLESTON, SC – Kathleen T. Brady, M.D., Ph.D., has been named vice president for research at the Medical University of South Carolina. This position oversees the Office of Research and its associated divisions. As the MUSC Institutional Official for Research, Brady will have responsibility for accreditation and regulatory affairs, university-wide promotion of research across its colleges and centers, representing the president and provost on internal and external research matters, and identifying institutional research strategies and benchmarks through the university’s strategic plan, Imagine MUSC 2020.

Brady’s scientific leadership at MUSC began in 1989 with her appointment as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She has since served as the associate dean for clinical and translational sciences in the MUSC College of Medicine and as director of the General Clinical Research Center, spearheaded the South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research Institute, and also served as principal investigator for two highly successful submissions for the NIH- funded clinical and translational science awards.
In 2010, Brady was awarded the honor of distinguished university professor. Since 2012, Brady has served as associate provost for clinical and translational science, and in 2014 she assumed the additional responsibility of interim associate provost for research.
Brady received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Fordham University, a doctorate in pharmacology from the Medical College of Virginia, and her medicine degree with a residency in psychiatry from MUSC. Brady has gained international prominence for her research in addiction psychiatry with a remarkable track record of NIH funding and publications. Her many awards and appointments include being named the distinguished psychiatrist lecturer at the 157th Annual American Psychiatric Association Meeting, receiving the Founders’ Award from the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, chairing the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and serving as president-elect of the International Society for Addiction Medicine. She has mentored more than thirty faculty and post-doctoral fellows which led, in part, to her receiving the MUSC Women Scholars Faculty Advancement Award in 2013. She is also a recipient of the SouthCarolina Women of Achievement Award from the Governor’s Commission on Women.
