April 3, 2024

The Presbyterian College Wind Ensemble & Chamber Winds, under the direction of Dr. Giovani Briguente, invite you to embark on a unique musical journey on Tuesday, April 9th at 7:30 PM in the Belk Auditorium, Clinton. This event, free and open to the public, welcomes all to experience an evening of Musical Episodes that promise innovation, contrast, and narrative cohesion.

Musical Episodes, a novel concept curated by Dr. Briguente, redefines the traditional concert experience. Each episode features a pair of distinct themes seamlessly intertwined through chamber and symphonic selections, performed without pause—a technique known as attacca. This format invites the audience into a continuous exploration of contrasting moods and musical styles.

The program is meticulously structured to offer a cohesive narrative arc. Episodes 1, 4, and 5 present complementary themes, while Episodes 2 and 3 provide contrast. The selection of themes isn’t arbitrary; rather, they weave together to form a compelling musical narrative.

Episode 1 serves as a grand opening, showcasing the dynamic range and power of both small and large wind ensembles. It sets the stage for the journey ahead, capturing the audience’s attention from the outset.

In Episode 2, the ensemble explores two well-known idioms in the band literature—a hymn and a rhythmically challenging selection. This contrast in styles offers a captivating musical dialogue that captivates the listener.

Episode 3 delves into the classic band sound, featuring folk melodies in Danner’s rendition of “The Water is Wide” and the intricate polyphony of McBeth’s “Canto.” Here, the ensemble demonstrates its versatility and skill in interpreting diverse musical traditions.

Episode 4 introduces a blend of old and new with a contemporary blues piece, “Takin’ It Easy,” juxtaposed with Gershwin’s timeless “Rhapsody in Blue.” This pairing highlights the enduring relevance of blues elements in contemporary music while paying homage to a classic American composition.

Finally, Episode 5 offers a fitting conclusion to the journey—a benediction followed by a spirited march. This homage to both religious and traditional band repertoire ensures a memorable send-off for the audience, with nods to Copland’s iconic compositions and Sousa’s beloved marches.

Through Musical Episodes, Dr. Briguente and the Presbyterian College Wind Ensemble & Chamber Winds invite audiences to engage with music in a new and immersive way. By blending innovation with tradition, contrast with cohesion, this performance promises to be a captivating exploration of the power of music to tell stories and evoke emotions. Join us for an unforgettable evening of harmonies, contrasts, and narratives—a true celebration of the art of wind ensemble performance.
