National History Day in South Carolina

June 3, 2014

CHARLESTON, SC – Community Museum Society, Inc.

Even with so many transitions in 2013-2014, the National History Day in South Carolina Program has seen more growth in the last six months than we thought possible.  Two of our regions experienced record growth, expanding from 47 students in 2013 to 133 students in 2014 and another region expanded from 67 students 2013 to 204 students in 2014.

Overall, six regional contests host 1,644 primary, middle and high school age students in the spring.

National History Day is based on the premise that solving the problems of our nation’s future is based on a solid understanding of it’s past.

BUT It’s NOT Just About History Education…

National History Day in SC teaches proper research, organization and presentation skills to our students, but it is building their character.

One NHD in SC Parent commented, “I have never been more proud of my son than I was last year. After his name was not announced to advance to the national contest, I remarked that we should leave to beat the crowd. My son looked at me and said, ‘No, I want to stay here to support my friends.’  I was impressed that he was part of a program that encourages those types of values.”

Why Support National History Day?

With our exciting growth comes a critical need for additional financial support.

Your support enables students to make exciting discoveries about their community, their nation, and their world. And students also discover much about themselves — that they are bright, creative individuals who can stand up to the rigors of the world with poise and maturity.

Only through your private support can we  continue to promote and manage the National History Day program in South Carolina.  Our rapid growth  is a direct result of the support you’ve enabled us to provide teachers and students through workshops and classroom visits and in administering local, regional and statewide contests.

The only way to continue to make these valuable opportunities available to the growing numbers of students and schools who want to participate is to grow our support system.
