National Theatre Live strikes gold with Treasure Island Screening at Harbison Theatre

December 22, 2015

Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic literary story of murder, money and mutiny is brought to life on the big screen at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College in the National Theatre Live matinee screening of Treasure Island on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., concluding Harbison Theatre’s new four-show National Theatre Live screening series.

In this thrilling screening of Bryony Lavery’s new stage adaptation, the tale begins on a dark, stormy night. The stars are out. Jim, the innkeeper’s granddaughter, opens the inn door to a terrifying stranger. At that old sailor’s feet sits a huge sea chest, full of secrets. Jim invites him in – and her dangerous, wondrous voyage begins.

National Theatre Live screen events are a special, new breed of production: shot live with multiple cameras, it’s like having the best seat in the house for every single moment of the play. This performance has had rave reviews worldwide, and gives each attendee a unique perspective, privy to special moments that happen between performer and audience.

“Astonishing. A remarkable take on Stevenson’s classic. Patsy Ferran dazzles,” says The Observer. A classic tale adapted for one of London’s most acclaimed theatres, this version of the story happens to have a female in the lead – and according to The Guardian, “they redress the gender balance while preserving the narrative’s excitement.”

In addition to the change in character portrayals, this production is noted for the spectacular scenic design, noted as a “drama of its own.” The Guardian continues – “Massive curved ribs enclose the action: we’re looking at a ship but also at the inside of someone’s body; into their heart, you feel. As the mighty deck is winched up, a beehive of cabins appear beneath; later the same space becomes a huge dripping cathedral of underground caves.”

National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking project launched six years ago that has broadcast over 20 productions from the Royal National Theatre in London, England and other associated locations to more than 3.5 million people across the world.
