Nelson Mullins receives 2016 Advancement in Animal Law Pro Bono Achievement Award

October 23, 2016

The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) has awarded Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP a 2016 Advancement in Animal Law Pro Bono Achievement Award. The award recognizes the Firm’s dedication of pro bono hours in helping ALDF achieve its mission to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system, according to the organization.

Nelson Mullins has assisted ALDF with several matters, including a petition for rulemaking to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service encouraging them to clarify its “attending veterinarian rule” relating to the experience required of veterinarians who treat animals housed by exhibitors such as roadside zoos. Nelson Mullins is also assisting with an appeal relating to Florida’s Sunshine Law and a Board of County Commissioners’ non-public approval of a primate breeding facility near a residential neighborhood. The law firm also is assisting in a request to the U.S. Department of Defense to extend the hold time for stray dogs and cats at shelters on military bases to allow rescue groups greater opportunity to find adoption opportunities and thereby reduce the number of such animals that are euthanized.

Founded in 1979 by attorneys active in shaping the emerging field of animal law, ALDF is supported by attorneys who protect animal interests by filing lawsuits to stop animal abuse and expand the boundaries of animal law, providing free legal assistance to prosecutors handling cruelty cases, working to strengthen state anti-cruelty statutes, and encouraging the federal government to enforce existing animal protection laws, among other efforts.
