New Elementary School Sets The Bar Locally and State-Wide

December 29, 2008

COLUMBIA, SC – December 29, 2008 – The new 95,105 square-foot Bridge Creek Elementary School was officially dedicated on November 20, 2008. The school opened in August with 441 students. The construction process remained on time, approximately 17 months to complete.

The brick structure and 22-acre site replicates that of neighboring Lake Carolina Elementary School, with nearly 50 instructional areas and associated support space.

“Bridge Creek Elementary School is a wonderful, wonderful addition to our District’s family of schools. This beautiful, state-of-the-art addition was completed on time and within budget, and will serve our community well for decades to come. Our thanks go out to all those who contributed their time and talent to make this possible,” said Richland School District Two’s chief financial officer, Bob Davis.

Bridge Creek’s exceptional design and large spaces have surely set the bar within the local community. But that’s not the only bar the school has set.

DESA, Inc., a small, woman and minority business enterprise (SWMBE) out of Columbia, managed the construction of the project. Bridge Creek can now boast that they are the first school within the state that has had an SWMBE to successfully manage the completion of their school. Other SWMBEs who helped with the construction were A-1 Masonry, L.A. Barrier and Sanders Concrete.

Diane E. Sumpter, president and chief executive officer of DESA said, “We are honored to have been chosen as the construction manager for this project. The collaborative effort between DESA, Contract Construction and LS3P has made history within the state and even more importantly, a strong, sound educational facility for the children of our community.”

Contract Construction, Inc. was the general contractor for the project and LS3P Associates, Ltd. took care of the design of the property, as architect.

City Council Vice-Chair of Richland District Nine, Val Hutchinson, added, “The Richland Two community welcomes Bridge Creek Elementary School into our family! This school will become the center of the community, involving families in numerous learning and recreational activities.”

Representative Anton Gunn (District 79) added, “I am so glad to see that Bridge Creek Elementary has joined our community. We now have another state-of-the-art school within our district. This school, like all others in our district, will help all of our children succeed and will continue to make our community flourish.” Bridge Creek Elementary is located at 121 Bombing Range Road, Elgin, SC 29045.
