New head football coach at Westwood High

When the Westwood Redhawks take the field this summer, the playbook will be in the hands of new head football coach Dustin Curtis. Curtis comes to Richland School District Two from A.C. Flora High School in Richland School District One, but he’s no stranger to Richland Two. He has held physical education teaching positions at Killian Elementary and E.L. Wright Middle schools. Curtis served three years at Spring Valley High School, coaching on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball and winning a region title in 2006.

Westwood Athletics Director Jason Powell says during Curtis’ years at Flora, the Falcons won four region titles, amassed 59 wins, and played for two Upper State Championships. “We believe he has the characteristics that match our athletic values of: Hard Work, Sacrifice, Discipline and Accountability that will be important in continuing the success of the program,” said Powell.

Curtis is a National Board Certified Teacher and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from the University of South Carolina. Curtis says he is looking forward to continuing Westwood’s gold standard of excellence. “I am extremely blessed to have this opportunity. Westwood not only has a young, but strong football tradition, but also a beautiful facility and top notch academic institution,” said Curtis.

Curtis succeeds Rodney Summers who is leaving to take a head coaching job at May River High School in Bluffton. Curtis and his wife live in Forest Acres with their 6-year-old son and are members at Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
