Newberry Hospital’s Joint Replacement Program Earns Second “Gold Seal of Approval” from The Joint Commission

December 9, 2014

NEWBERRY, SC – Already recognized by Healthgrades® as being among the top ten percent in the nation for joint replacement surgery, Newberry Hospital has earned another accolade, receiving its second straight two-year certification from The Joint Commission for hip and knee joint replacement.

Newberry Hospital earned its first national certification for its joint replacement program from The Joint Commission in 2013, becoming the only hospital in South Carolina’s Midlands with the distinction of earning the “Gold Seal of Approval” for joint replacement. Newberry Hospital is also an Orthopedic Center of Excellence.

Newberry Hospital CEO Bruce Baldwin remarked that earning national accreditation is an important vote of confidence as The Joint Commission evaluates more than 20,500 health care organizations, following stringent criteria. Newberry Hospital’s joint replacement program earned certification with zero deficiencies.

“This is a strong statement to our community and to South Carolina about Newberry Hospital’s efforts and commitment to providing the highest quality of care to those undergoing joint replacement and delivering exceptional patient outcomes. We have a high rate of patient satisfaction with our physicians and hospital from the patients who have a hip or knee joint replaced at Newberry Hospital. We are very proud of this accomplishment.”

Joint Commission inspector, Dr. Richard W. Cohen, had nothing but praise for Newberry Hospital and its joint replacement program. He is going to share some of Newberry Hospital’s best practices with other hospitals.

Newberry Hospital’s joint replacement program involves employees from throughout the hospital, including nurses, physical therapists, dietary, lab pharmacists and technicians, anesthesiologists. The joint team also includes the orthopedic surgeons of Palmetto Bone & Joint, who have worked hand-in-hand with Newberry Hospital to establish and maintain the national award-winning program.

In October, Healthgrades®, the leading provider of information to help consumers make an informed decision about a physician or hospital, named Newberry Hospital among the top ten percent in the nation for joint replacement surgery for the third year in a row (2013-2015). Additionally, Healthgrades presented Newberry Hospital with its Joint Replacement Excellence Award™ for the third straight year.
