Newberry Hospital Names 38-Year Veteran As Its New CEO

December 5, 2014

NEWBERRY, SC – Newberry Hospital is pleased to announce that Bruce Baldwin, a 38-year veteran of the healthcare industry, has been chosen as the hospital’s new chief executive officer (CEO). Baldwin succeeds interim CEO Craig Cudworth, who has served as the Midlands area hospital’s CEO for the last 14 months.

Over the course of his career, Baldwin has served as CEO at five hospitals across the country. He most recently led Grandview Medical Center, a 70-bed acute care hospital in Jasper, Tennessee. Prior to that, Baldwin was CEO of Putnam Community Medical Center, a 141-bed acute care hospital in Palatka, Florida. Newberry Hospital has 90 acute care beds.

Baldwin is highly respected for his proven track records for improving hospitals’ operational performance and patient satisfaction score. Additionally, he has been very successful in recruiting and retaining physicians to his hospitals, a welcome skill at a time when physicians are in high demand and short supply.

Commenting on Baldwin’s appointment, Dr. Alan Paysinger, Chairman of the Newberry Hospital Board of Trustees and an internal medicine specialist with Newberry Internal Medicine, said, “I speak for the entire Newberry Hospital family when I say how pleased we are to have found a leader like Bruce who has the skills needed to please patients, physicians, and accountants all at the same time. That is a gift, and we all look forward to working with him.”

Baldwin’s hiring comes after an extensive national search. Newberry Hospital has distinguished itself as one of the top small, community hospitals in the nation. It has been named in the top ten percent in the country for joint replacement surgery for three years in a row by Healthgrades. CMS also rates Newberry Hospital among the top 10 percent in the nation for patient satisfaction. The Joint Commission just named Newberry Hospital among the top performing hospitals in the nation for surgery and pneumonia care.

A native of Illinois, Baldwin earned a B.S. in Accounting from Eastern Illinois University, and has extensive graduate education in healthcare management. When not working, he enjoys fishing, golf, his family, and church.

Baldwin says, “I feel very fortunate to have been named CEO of Newberry Hospital. Going forward I plan to fine-tune existing positives such as quality patient care and support our excellent physicians, dedicated employees and the community. With the difficult future we see in Healthcare, we must position the Hospital to be able to remain stable in our community through growth, physician recruitment, strong leadership, fiscal responsibility and strategic planning.”
