January 14, 2013

COLUMBIA, SC – January 14, 2013  – The Nickelodeon Theatre, South Carolina’s only non-profit art house film theater and its annual independent film festival, Indie Grits, have received a grant from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which will be used for 2013’s Indie Grits Festival.

The Nickelodeon has received a $5,000 grant from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Indie Grits will specifically utilize the grant for the second installment of Cinemovements, the collaborative effort between the South Carolina Philharmonic’s conductor Morihiko Nakahara and Indie Grits. Cinemovements, which will take place April 15, 2013, is a live event that pairs original silent films with a live performance by musicians conducted by Nakahara.

“Indie Grits continues to provide innovative programming year after year, and we were so happy working with the S.C. Phil’s Morihiko Nakahara on Cinemovements last year,” said Andy Smith, executive director of the Nickelodeon Theatre and head of Indie Grits Festival. “We are honored to be awarded this prestigious grant from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which will enable this year’s Cinemovements to take place. Cinemovements is an event that’s so unique to Indie Grits, and we’re pleased to bring it back, by popular demand, to our Indie Grits festival-goers this year.”

“We were delighted to hear about the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences grant that will enable us to collaborate with the Indie Grits Festival again. This is such an innovative and unique way to bring live symphonic music and filmmaking together and we are all grateful for the opportunity,” said Rhonda Hunsinger, executive director of the South Carolina Philharmonic.

This year’s Indie Grits Festival will take place April 12-21, 2013 in Columbia, S.C. In its seventh year, Indie Grits features the best in independent and experimental filmmaking coming from the Southeastern United States. Additionally, the festival includes a variety of festival partner events designed to showcase the best of progressive Southern culture.
