November 2, 2016

The PhD Project, an award-winning program to create diversity in management, founded by the KPMG Foundation, the lead funder of the program announces that Nimai Garrett, a resident of Columbia, SC, has been invited to attend the 23rd annual PhD Project Conference, being held at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare from November 16-18, 2016. Nimai Garrett lives in Columbia, South Carolina, where he works as the Director of Alumni Affairs at Allen University.

Nimai Garrett is a native of Brooklyn, New York, attended Allen University in Columbia South Carolina where he graduated with a Bachelor in Arts Degree in 2007, and he completed his Masters of Business Administration in 2009 from Webster University (Columbia, SC Campus).  Mr. Garrett is the past Director of Marketing for Brooklyn Plaza Medical Center, Inc. (Brooklyn, NY); and currently he is serving as the Director of Alumni Affairs at one of the oldest historically black colleges and universities in South Carolina, Allen University.

The PhD Project, a 501(c) (3) organization that the KPMG Foundation founded in 1994, recruit’s minority professionals from business into doctoral programs in all business disciplines. Mainly through the efforts of The PhD Project, there has been an increase in the number of minority business professors from 294 to 1,344. Further, 278 minorities are currently enrolled in doctoral programs, and will take a place at the front of the classroom over the next few years. The Project attacks the root cause of minority under-representation in corporate jobs: historically, very few minority college students study business as an entrée to a corporate career.  Diversifying the faculty attracts more minorities to study business and better prepares all students to function in a diverse workforce.

Qualified candidates are invited to this annual conference where they hear from deans, professors and current minority doctoral students about the benefits of pursuing a business Ph.D.  Candidates are exposed to more than 100 doctoral-granting universities that are represented during a university exhibit fair at the conference. Networking with the university reps, deans, professors and current doctoral students provides candidates with the tools and resources they need to be better prepared for the application/admission process to doctoral programs.

The PhD Project has received ongoing support from its sponsoring companies, participating universities and organizations, and supply alliance members. Its founding organizations in addition to the  KPMG Foundation, are the Graduate Management Admission Council, Citi Foundation, AACSB International. The leading corporations, foundations and associations funding it include:  300+ Participating Universities, AICPA Foundation, DiversityInc, Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP, Rockwell Collins, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., American Marketing Association, John Deere FoundationCIGNA, Edison International (on behalf of the California State University System), Lincoln Financial Group, Aerotek/ TEKsystems (operating companies of Allegis Group), American Accounting Association, The Hershey Company, Academy of Management, NASBA, OCWEN and Thrivent Financial.
