Nominations Open for 2016 James F. Barker Ethics in Action Award

June 28, 2016

Clemson University’s Rutland Institute for Ethics has opened nominations for its annual James F. Barker Ethics in Action Award. This prestigious award recognizes and celebrates a special individual’s actions that exemplify integrity and, in a continuing and constructive way, encourage commitment to ethical conduct and the value of integrity. Nominations will be accepted until 5 pm on Fri., July 22, through the Rutland Institute’s website at www.clemson.edu/ethics or through an online nomination form available at: tiny.cc/RutlandAward.

“We are seeking nominations statewide and encourage individuals, businesses and civic leaders throughout South Carolina to recognize one of their own with this special distinction,” said Daniel E. Wueste, Ph.D. and director of the Rutland Institute for Ethics.

Criteria for Selection
Recipients will be recognized for action(s) and significant accomplishment(s) that reveal a deep and sustained commitment to ethical conduct and the value of integrity. Nominations will include a narrative description of the action(s) and accomplishment(s) that prompt the nomination and be supported by a minimum of two independent references (i.e., at least one source in addition to the nominator).

Method of Selection
A subcommittee of the Rutland Institute for Ethics Advisory Board – to include the director of the Institute as well as other persons designated by the RIE Advisory Board – will select the award recipient in early August. The recipient will be notified immediately and publicly announced shortly thereafter.

Background
In 2014, the Rutland Institute for Ethics Advisory Board decided to name the Institute’s highest honor after James F. Barker, the 14th president of Clemson University, in recognition of the ways he exemplified integrity, thereby bringing ethics into focus in the best possible way: by living it. The James F. Barker Ethics in Action Award is an ongoing and constructive way to recognize and encourage commitment to ethical conduct and the value of integrity. Barker himself received the inaugural Ethics in Action Award in 2014, and Scott T. Dishman of The Family Effect received the distinction in 2015. The Ethics in Action Award was bestowed its own honor, the Mercury Award of Excellence, by the South Carolina chapter of the Public Relations Society of America in April 2016.

Details of the nomination process are listed here, or by visiting the Rutland Institute’s website (www.clemson.edu/ethics). Specific questions relating to nominating may be directed to John Wareham, Assistant Director, via email or by calling (864) 656-2473.

The 2016 James F. Barker Ethics in Action Award will be presented to the recipient in a dinner held in his/her honor on Thurs., Oct. 27, 2016 at The Poinsett Club in Greenville, S.C.
