Non Profit Minute – Tanika Epps, Communities in Schools of the Midlands

Communities In Schools of the Midlands (CISM) is an affiliate of Communities In Schools National. The start of CISM dates back to 1986 when a collaboration consisting of the Junior League, the SC Department of Social Services, the Department of Juvenile Justice, Richland School District One and the Solicitor’s Office joined together to address the dropout epidemic in the Midlands.

The mission of the organization is to “surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.”

CIS uses a holistic approach to addressing both the academic and nonacademic needs of students. Working with school leadership and staff, CISM site coordinators — who are based inside schools — prioritize the needs of the school, determine which supports need to be improved and identify supports that the schools need but don’t currently have. Site coordinators also identify students at risk of dropping out, assess what they need and then find the right supports to ensure they stay on track to graduate.
