North Charleston High School Principal Henry Darby awarded Order of the Palmetto

February 9, 2021

Governor Henry McMaster presented North Charleston High School Principal Henry Darby with the Order of the Palmetto. The presentation took place on North Charleston High School’s campus.

The Order of the Palmetto is the state’s highest civilian honor awarded to citizens of South Carolina for extraordinary lifetime service and achievements of national or statewide significance. The Order of the Palmetto is a once in a lifetime achievement.

Darby’s story recently attracted national media attention.

Darby was born and raised in the Liberty Hill community and has seen first-hand the suffering caused by poverty. He wanted to try and find a way to help his students, if even in a small way. So, Darby quietly decided to take on third job and went to work at a local Walmart. He uses the money he earns at Walmart to provide for his students.

Darby was interviewed earlier this month by reporters, and his story inspired readers and viewers across the Lowcountry to contribute to the fund. Over $50,000 has been donated by local citizens, and just this week, Walmart also donated $50,00.

The NBC Today Show was on hand to capture the moment when Walmart presented him the $50,000 check.
