Okonite investing $400 million in Orangeburg County expansion, creating 105 jobs

The Okonite Company, a cable and wire manufacturer with a long-standing presence in Orangeburg County, is expanding its operations with a $400 million investment expected to create 105 new jobs.
The company plans to build an approximately 552,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on its existing property at 2276 Rowesville Road in Orangeburg. The new plant will help Okonite meet growing demand for its high-voltage electric cable products.
Initial phases of construction are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. The project is expected to take approximately two to three years to complete.
Founded in 1878, Okonite is one of the oldest manufacturers of insulated electrical wire and cable in the United States. Its products serve industries including electric utilities, oil and gas, railroads and chemical manufacturing.
The company operates 34 locations nationwide, including two production facilities in Orangeburg County.
“We thank the South Carolina Department of Commerce, the Orangeburg County Development Commission and the city of Orangeburg for their invaluable help and prompt actions in making our expansion possible,” Okonite CEO and Board Chairman David J. Sokira said.
The South Carolina Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved job development credits related to the expansion. The council also awarded Orangeburg County a $1.5 million Rural Infrastructure Fund grant to help cover site preparation and building construction costs.
