Outgoing Chamber CEO Amanda Benfield Shares Leadership Insights and Secrets to Success
January 20, 2025Amanda Benfield, who has served as the CEO of the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce since 2017, is preparing to transition into a new role with the City of Fountain Inn. In a recent interview, Benfield reflected on her journey, the Chamber’s growth, and the principles that have guided her success.
A Calling to Lead
Benfield’s path to becoming CEO was shaped by a blend of passion and preparation. “I began my journey with the Chamber in 2010 as the communications and marketing specialist while also being a small business owner in downtown Laurens,” she said. That experience, combined with her leadership role at the United Way of Laurens County, laid the groundwork for what she describes as “God’s plan” to guide her into the position.
Building Momentum and Making an Impact
Under Benfield’s leadership, the Chamber has flourished. “One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is the collaboration between the Chamber, the County, and the cities of Laurens, Clinton, and Fountain Inn to develop initiatives that enhance the community,” she explained. The organization also grew its staff, adding a tourism marketing manager, and established a foundation to ensure fiscal sustainability.
Benfield believes that teamwork and a clear vision have been key to the Chamber’s success. “We’ve worked hard to be a hub for communication, coordination, and collaboration across the county,” she said.
A Growing Community
Reflecting on the changes she’s witnessed, Benfield expressed pride in how Laurens County has evolved during her tenure. “Over the last seven years, we’ve navigated leadership changes, experienced significant industry growth, and faced the challenges brought on by the pandemic. Despite these hurdles, Laurens County has continued to thrive,” she said.
For Benfield, the heart of the community lies in its people. “The residents are caring, passionate, and deeply committed to making this community a better place,” she noted. “Their dedication has been a driving force behind our progress, and it’s been inspiring to witness the collective efforts of everyone who calls Laurens County home.”
She also highlighted the county’s unique offerings, saying, “Laurens County is an incredible place to live, work, and play. From its strong sense of community to its potential for growth, there’s so much to celebrate here.”
Overcoming Challenges and Learning to Delegate
Leadership comes with its challenges, and for Benfield, one of the toughest has been learning to delegate. “I want to do it all,” she admitted, but she’s found strength in her team. “Watching them grow and take pride in their accomplishments has been a highlight of my career.”
Looking Ahead to Fountain Inn
As Benfield prepares for her new role in Fountain Inn, she’s excited about the potential to make a difference in another vibrant community. “The city has tremendous potential, and I’m eager to build on that momentum,” she said.
The Secrets to Success
When asked about the principles that have guided her leadership, Benfield highlighted the importance of listening, collaboration, and adaptability. “Leadership is about service, not authority,” she said. “A good leader supports, empowers, and inspires others to succeed.”
Parting Words and a Special Farewell
Benfield’s last day with the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce will be February 20, 2025, during the Chamber’s Annual Awards Dinner. Fittingly, she will close this chapter of her professional career by celebrating the businesses, sponsors, volunteers, and community members who have contributed to the Chamber’s success.
