Land in Judson to become community garden

GREENVILLE, SC – January 9, 2013 – Pacolet Milliken Enterprises, Inc. donated two acres of land in the Judson neighborhood, located two miles west of downtown Greenville, for the creation of a community garden.

The project, a collaboration between the Generous Garden Project, CITY Initiative and the Judson Community Association, is a focal point of the Judson Community Plan that was approved by Greenville County Council in May 2012.

“Pacolet Milliken was glad to donate land to help further the revitalization process in Judson,” said Rick Webel, president of Pacolet Milliken.  “We hope that the community garden will instill pride within Judson residents and that they will enjoy the literal fruits of their labor.”

Built in 1912 as a mill village, the town of Judson still contains a mill operated by Milliken & Company.  Pacolet Milliken owns dozens of surrounding acres that used to hold mill houses and other neighborhood buildings. The site of the donated land, which formerly housed the town laundry, is located near other community hubs including Hollis Academy and YMCA Judson Community Center.

“We applaud the efforts of the community to take an initiative to improve their neighborhood,” said John Montgomery, director of land holdings at Pacolet Milliken. “This isn’t the answer to community revitalization, but it’s certainly a start.”

Pacolet Milliken is also working with the Greenville County Recreation department on plans to lease 10 acres of former baseball fields in Judson for a future park, walking trail and green space.
