Palmetto Health and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine welcome incoming class of resident physicians

High Percentage of Resident Physicians Remain in South Carolina to Care for South Carolinians
COLUMBIA, SC – Palmetto Health and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine faculty and staff welcome the newest group of first-year resident physicians after receiving the long-awaited results of Main Match Day 2016. Sixty-nine resident physicians matched with our system. Twenty-three are graduating from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Columbia, University of South Carolina-Greenville, and the Medical University of South Carolina. Others hail from 47 U.S. and international medical and osteopathic schools and represent 21 states.
Match Day is an important day for graduating medical students and is a celebration for participating medical schools, medical residency programs and teaching hospitals. The Match occurs annually on the third Friday in March at each of the 155 medical schools and 693 participating academic health care systems and sites that sponsor medical residency education in United States locations where the results of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) are announced.
Resident physicians at Palmetto Health practice medicine in more than nine specialties. Each new physician has earned a degree from an accredited medical institution, and has the title of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Under the supervision of highly trained attending physicians, resident physicians complete their graduate medical education at the Midlands’ only health care system that provides medical residency training.

Earlier this year, six doctors of dental medicine and 20 advanced resident and fellow physicians in 11 sub-specialty graduate medical education programs also were welcomed, for a total of 97 incoming resident and fellow physicians training in more than 20 specialty areas.
Palmetto Health resident and fellow physicians care for patients in the Midlands at Palmetto Health and University of South Carolina facilities, as well as at the Columbia Free Medical Clinic and South Carolina Medical Mission events. Since 1972, the Graduate Medical Education program at Palmetto Health has awarded advanced diplomas to more than 2,000 resident and fellow physicians and approximately half of these graduate physicians have remained in South Carolina and continue to provide care for citizens across the State.
