Palmetto Health Foundation announces race rebrand—“Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon”

May 27, 2016

On Saturday, Oct. 22, thousands of walkers and runners will experience the 26th Walk for Life and a rebranded race—“Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon”—all benefiting Palmetto Health Breast Center.

New walk and certified race routes will showcase the vibrant city of Columbia and will begin and end around Spirit Communications Park, home of the Columbia Fireflies. Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon runners will run along the beautiful Congaree River, historic Elmwood Park and other areas of downtown Columbia before ending the race at home plate in Spirit Communications Park. Other race options will be 5K and 10K certified races administered by Strictly Running. On Friday, Oct. 21, Palmetto Health Foundation will host an expo for walkers and runners at Spirit Communications Park.

Walk and race registration is live! WalkForLifeColumbia.org | FamouslyHotPinkHalf.org
Registration includes an event shirt, and breast cancer survivors will receive a special pink bandana.

Proceeds in recent years have helped fund 3D Tomosythesis software for Palmetto Health Breast Center at Richland, a whole breast ultrasound system for Palmetto Health Baptist Parkridge and a new digital mammography system for the mobile mammography unit.

Walk for Life began in 1991 when former First Lady of Columbia, Beth Coble, founded the event with Palmetto Health Baptist (formerly Baptist Medical Center) leaders. For 26 years, the event has educated women and men about the importance of early detection and has raised funds for the latest technology, programs and services for patients and families helped by Palmetto Health Breast Center. Event proceeds, to date, total more than $8 million, including in-kind donations and stay in the Midlands of South Carolina at Palmetto Health Breast Center, where an average of 40,000 mammograms are performed each year.

About Palmetto Health Breast Center: As the largest provider of screening and diagnostic breast imaging services in our community, Palmetto Health Breast Center is critical to the health of women and men in our community. An average of 40,000 mammograms are performed each year at the Breast Center. It was the first program in South Carolina to be fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, administered by the American College of Surgeons, which ensures that patients will have access to comprehensive care, an interdisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options, breast cancer conferences, nurse navigators, information about ongoing clinical trials and quality breast care close to home. The Breast Center also provided the first mobile mammography unit in South Carolina more than a decade ago.
