Palmetto Health offers walk-in medical care mobile clinic

July 27, 2016

Palmetto Health now offers convenient access to quality care throughout the Midlands region with its new walk-in medical care mobile clinic. The 40-foot long mobile clinic includes two private exam rooms featuring the latest medical equipment and private restrooms, a check-in and waiting area, and an area to perform screenings. Patients age two and older are welcome and no appointment is needed. With many insurance plans, the copay for the mobile clinic is the same as a regular office visit. Through Palmetto Health’s occupational medicine program, HealthWorks, the mobile clinic will visit local businesses to provide routine wellness screenings and services. The mobile clinic is available at Palmetto Health Richland near the Emergency Department, SundayFriday, noon-10 p.m.

Under the supervision of a physician, patients are cared for by two nurse practitioners and a certified medical assistant who provide treatment for common illnesses and minor injuries such as: allergy symptoms, colds, flu, fever, sore throats, rashes, ear pain, simple infections, minor burns, minor cuts, scrapes, bruises, bug bites/stings, and minor sprains and strains. Preventive services such as screenings and vaccinations also are offered.

“The mobile clinic allows us to provide services on-site and wherever they’re needed,” said HealthWorks medical director Stephen Izard, M.D.

In addition to serving businesses, the mobile clinic will be used to bring medical services to patients who do not have easy access to health care. The need for a mobile clinic was evident during the recent flooding in October when Palmetto Health set up temporary clinics to provide first aid and tetanus shots to residents of the local communities.

“Now we can be more nimble when needs like this arises,” said E.J. Mayeaux, M.D., chair of the department of family medicine, Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group. “Whether the need is for screenings and patient education at a health fair or first aid for flood victims, we’re well prepared.”
