Palmetto Place Kids Announces New Resident Life Coordinator

June 12, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter is pleased to announce the hiring of Charlie Howell as its new Resident Life Coordinator.

As resident life coordinator, Howell will work directly with the shelter’s residents on a day-to-day basis to assess needs, challenges and successes. He will work in conjunction with the lead houseparent to plan weekday and weekend schedules for residents. He will serve as the shelter’s liaison with county Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the Department of Social Services to connect each resident with the right resources and ensure the well-being of every resident.

“We are very excited to have Charlie working with our kids and our staff,” said Erin Hall, executive director of Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter.  “He truly understands the importance of working with kids on an individual basis and being an advocate for each child’s individual needs.”

Before working for Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter, Howell worked for the South Carolina Department of Social Services from 2012 to 2014, and from 2007 to 2009 as a social worker in Richland County.  Howell also worked with the South Carolina Youth Advocacy Program from 2009 to 2012 as a treatment coordinator.  He served in the US Army from 1991 to 2004 as second lieutenant.  Howell graduated from South Carolina State University in 1997 with a master’s degree in education, and in 1991 from Newberry College with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.
