PalmettoPride Awards 144 Community Improvement and Enforcement Grants

COLUMBIA, SC – January 19, 2012 – PalmettoPride held its annual grantsluncheon honoring the 2011-2012 grant award winners. The PalmettoPridegrants provide trees, cleanup supplies and funds needed to enhanceenvironmental education, improve communities and increase enforcementefforts across the state.

The statewide environmental organization coordinates grants in 5categories: Litter Trashes Everyone Education Grant; Community PrideGrant; Enforcement, Keep South Carolina Beautiful and Tree. A total of144 groups received $443,197 in grant funds and 1,889 trees. In additionto grant funds, groups initiating litter pickup programs received bags,gloves and vests. PalmettoPride also presented six Spirit Awards. The PalmettoPride SpiritAwards honor individuals and groups for their efforts in furthering themission of PalmettoPride in their four program areas.

Pat Black of Branchville High School and Sonoco Recycling EducationCenter won for engaging students in environmental education,sustainability and community improvement projects. Edith Beckham ofSullivan’s Island and the Georgetown Community won for on-going cleanupefforts. Officer James Catoe with Lancaster Sheriff’s Department and theYork County Sheriff’s Department won for advancements in litter controlenforcement.

Chakisse Newton with Cardinal Consulting gave the keynote address to the 150 guests in the Seawell’s banquet hall.
