Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity Presented Hearts and Hands Award

July 1, 2015

SPARTANBURG, SC – Wofford College’s Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity was presented the Heart and Hands Award at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind’s recent graduation ceremony. The Hearts and Hands Award was established by the school’s Board of Commissioners in 1997 to recognize local organizations that provide exemplary and extraordinary service to the students and programs of the school.

The members of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity established the Hornet Hoops Basketball Tournament in 2010 to raise funds for athletic programs at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. Since then, the members have raised more than $20,000 through the school’s fundraising arm, The Walker Foundation. The college students took on the responsibility of fundraising as well as coordinating and facilitating the event.

As a result of their work, students at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind have received needed athletic equipment and supplies. The students have had the opportunity to participate in the tournament alongside the Wofford students. Knowledge of the school has increased among the Wofford Community, which extends across the state and country.
