Pickens County Student Wins Big in January’s Video Contest

COLUMBIA, SC- January 31, 2008 – Emily Leising from D.W. Daniel High School in Easley Creates #1 Video; Greenville Fine Arts Center student is runner up- a 2nd win for that school! First Lady Jenny Sanford announced today that South Carolina fans judging on OurStage.com determined Emily Leising’s “What You Eat” as the #1 video in January’s Healthy SC School Video Contest.

Emily is a student at D.W. Daniel High School in Easley which is part of the Pickens county school district. “What You Eat” sends the healthy message that ‘you are what you eat.’ Through animation, the video illustrates that unhealthy diets lead to teenage obesity. This video can currently be viewed on the homepage of www.healthysc.gov. Emily Leising will receive $3,500 in the form of cash or savings bond. D.W. Daniel High will receive $1,000 worth of athletic equipments of its choice, and Emily’s class will receive a healthy lunch catered by Subway.

“What You Eat” is currently competing for an additional $5,000 in the OurStage Finals which ends at midnight.

Noah Smith, a student at Greenville Fine Arts Center (FAC), created the runner up video “Health Camp.” Noah will receive $1,500 in cash or savings bond. December’s Healthy SC School Video Contest winner, Danny Drescher, was also from the FAC. Cash and prizes received by FAC in this contest total over $6,000!

Due to popular demand, the contest has been extended into the month of February! Here is some information about this coming month’s competition: Important dates for February contest
• Video submissions accepted from February 1st through February 20th
• Quarter-Finals begin February 23rd
• Semi-Finals begin February 27th (The winner of the Semi-Finals is the February Healthy SC
School Video Contest winner)
• OurStage Finals round begins February 29th
Prizes in February contest
• #1 video receives $3,500 cash (or savings bond)
• #2 video receives $1,500 cash (or savings bond)
• School of #1 video receives $1,000 worth of athletic equipment of its choice
• Class of #1 video receives Subway lunch
