Organization – 20th Anniversary
Piedmont Care is best known as the nonprofit organization providing HIV/AIDS care in Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union counties. Since inception in 1994, we have served over 1300 people living with HIV/AIDS. Much of this is funded through federal programs and encompasses a wide range of proactive services that benefit people living with HIV/AIDS and their families.
Our mission also addresses HIV prevention. We have served thousands of our neighbors with HIV prevention services including condom distribution and education. More than 600 people have learned their HIV status through our free HIV testing and counseling program. Unlike services relating to care, these programs must be sustained entirely by local resources.
Statement of Need
South Carolina ranks 8th in the nation for AIDS case rates and is 1 of 8 states with an infection rate of at least 354 HIV diagnoses/100,000 citizens. According to the CDC, of the top 20 cities in the U.S. with the highest rates of HIV infection, two are in S.C. (Columbia #15, Charleston #22) and another is our close neighbor (Charlotte #14). 18% of people in the U.S. infected with HIV are unaware of their status. In the U.S., someone is infected with HIV every 9.5 minutes.
