Polls Open Tuesday in Special Republican Primary for U.S. Senate

Greenville County voters will join South Carolinians statewide at the polls Tuesday, Aug. 11, for the special Republican primary for the U.S. Senate. Polling places will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Ten Republicans are seeking the nomination. Listed alphabetically, they are:

• Duke Buckner, Walterboro attorney

• Danny Ford II, Upstate farmer

• Russell Fry, U.S. representative for the 7th Congressional District

• Darline Graham, U.S. senator and sister of the late senator Lindsey Graham

• Mark Lynch, Greenville businessman

• Mark McBride, former Myrtle Beach mayor

• Ralph Norman, U.S. representative for the 5th Congressional District

• Glenda Gail Parker, retired Air Force reservist and Department of Defense budget analyst

• Mark Sanford, former congressman and governor

• Sam Shepherd, Lexington County scientist and inventor

Not every voter is eligible. Anyone who cast a ballot in the June 9 Democratic primary or the June 23 Democratic runoff is barred from voting Tuesday, because the State Election Commission determined that all of those contests fall within the same election cycle. Voters who took part in the June Republican contests, along with those who sat out both parties’ primaries entirely, may participate.

A candidate must clear 50% of the vote to win outright. If no one reaches that threshold, the two highest vote-getters will meet in a runoff Tuesday, Aug. 25. Early voting for a runoff, should one be required, would run Aug. 19 through Aug. 21.

All standard Greenville County precincts will operate at their usual locations.
