Pop-up summer drive-in movie series lineup announced by What’s Next Midlands

May 15, 2017

What’s Next Midlands’ newest project, a pop-up drive-in movie theater, will feature a new movie every month between May and August 2017. The Summer Drive-In Movie Series, presented by What’s Next Midlands, was inspired by an idea submitted to WhatsNextMidlands.com and is being brought to life by the Historic Columbia Speedway in Cayce, S.C., and Fun Flicks Columbia.

Each event will have a unique theme and will feature a film on a 55ft. screen. Moviegoers can expect to enjoy a nostalgic evening in an old-school, outdoor drive-in movie theater setting, with festival elements including food vendors, face painting, outdoor games and more.

Midlands festivalgoers will be familiar with the work of Fun Flicks Columbia operator John Banks, whose Tartan Day South festival brings 10,000 guests each spring to the site of the former motor speedway for family fun in a professionally managed environment.

Schedule for Summer Drive-In Series, presented by What’s Next Midlands

  • Saturday, May 20: Family Night (The Sandlot)
  • Saturday, June 17: Throwback Night (Grease)
  • Saturday, July 22: Horror Night (The Shining)
  • Saturday, August 12: Star Wars Night (Rogue One)

Gates will open at 7pm for each event, and the movie will start shortly after sundown. Audio will be transmitted via radio frequency, just like in the old days. A limited number of regular parking passes are available for $20 per vehicle at http://summerdriveinseries.com/.

Regular parking spaces are first-come, first-served. Front-row VIP parking spaces are available for $30. Walk-in admission for those wishing to bring chairs or picnic blankets is $5 per person, and parking (outside of line of sight of screen) will be available in an overflow lot. (Walk-in admission will be available once parking pass spaces are sold out.)

While concessions including soft drinks and classic movies snacks will be for sale, guests are welcome to bring picnics and coolers.

Due to high interest in the series, each film is expected to sell out. Advance parking passes are recommended. Frequently asked questions, including rain dates assigned to each film, can also be found on the website: http://summerdriveinseries.com/.
