MargaretPope1hiCOLUMBIA, SC – Margaret Pope, public finance attorney and partner with Pope Zeigler, has been appointed to the board of directors of The Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation. Founded in 1990, the Palmetto Trust serves as the statewide partner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, advocates and acts to preserve historic properties, educates about the history and culture of South Carolina, and connects others in the state who are passionate about historic preservation. Recent projects include the preservation of the Prosperity Depot, the preservation of the Caleb Coker house, built in 1832 in Society Hill and an example of late Federal architecture, the research, stabilization, and clean-up of the Anderson slave cabins, and the Save The Wilkins House initiative in Greenville.

“It is wonderful to have Margaret join our leadership team,” says Mike Bedenbaugh, executive director of the Palmetto Trust. “Her love of history, SC’s historic places, and professional approach to board development has already proven to be a vital asset to our mission of saving the endangered historic structures of South Carolina.”

“The Palmetto Trust is one of the very few state-wide organizations here in South Carolina that is committed to saving the historic structures of our state’s heritage,” says Margaret Pope. “Too often, officials and leaders have been quick to tear down buildings in order to replace them with the very latest in development — development that is often soon dated itself. But once destroyed, those historic buildings don’t return. It’s a real privilege to serve on a board that’s committed to preserving so much of our heritage throughout the state.”

Pope is president and founding member of The Crescent Society, a group dedicated to “recognizing and inspiring leadership excellence in South Carolina women;” a member of the board of directors of the Governor’s School for the Arts Foundation; a member of the board of directors & advocates of Historic Columbia; a member of the board of directors and past president of the American College of Bond Counsel; and past chair of the South Carolina Commission on Women. She graduated with a degree in political science from Emory University, then went on to receive a JD from USC’s School of Law. She is a member of the South Carolina bar, as well as the National Association of Bond Lawyers.
