Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands hosts classes for children suffering the loss of a loved one

February 13, 2025

One in 9 children in South Carolina will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the age of 18. Processing that grief, especially the loss of a loved one, can be one of the most challenging and heartbreaking things a child can experience.

Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands is offering Healing Hearts Grief Program for children ages five to 18 to process the loss of a loved one. Through the program, children are connected with their peers allowing them to safely express their emotions in a comfortable environment. They are provided the tools and resources to grieve properly through therapeutic activities as they navigate their losses.

Participants attend four classes, each focusing on a different topic: emotions, memories, coping skills and changes. Parent and caregiver classes meet concurrently and cover the same topics, enabling continuous grief processing work at home. All programs are free, and dinner will be provided.

Classes are held at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands, 7 Richland Medical Park Drive. Dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. and classes run from 6–8 p.m.
Upcoming class schedule:

  • Thursday, Feb. 20
  • Thursday, March 27
  • Thursday, April 24
  • Thursday, May 22
