Providence Health recieves national recognition from U.S. News & World report and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Providence Health recently received national recognition from U.S. News & World Report. The hospital system tied for the second highest ranking in the State of South Carolina and was the only hospital in Columbia to make the Best of South Carolina Hospital list. In addition, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services awarded Providence Health a 4-star rating, which is the highest rank issued to a Columbia health care entity.
The U.S. News Best Hospitals analysis, also available on the web (http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/area/sc), applies scores based on data such as survival, patient safety, nurse staffing and other factors. In this analysis, facilities are ranked nationally in specialties from cancer to urology and are rated in common procedures and conditions such as heart bypass surgery, hip and knee replacement and colon cancer surgery. These specialty ratings are then bundled by hospital and ranked in a statewide comparison.
“South Carolina has nearly 100 hospitals. Seven meet high U.S. News standards and are ranked in the state,” says the website. Providence was the only hospital in Columbia on this list of seven.

- 6. Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, SC
o High performing in 3 Procedures/Conditions

The CMS ratings were made available through its Hospital Compare website (https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare). While CMS already posts quality data on hospitals, this is the first time it has published overall hospital ratings, which rank institutions from one to five stars. The average national rating was three stars, and only 2.2% of the more than 3,600 hospitals nationwide received five.
