Providence Hospital receives Society of Thoracic Surgeons top rating for 16th time in a row

November 21, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has awarded its highest overall rating of three stars to Providence Hospitals for the 16th time in a row.

Providence has now received this rating for every six-month reporting period since STS started giving this recognition, beginning with 2006 data. In the latest period, only 12-15 percent of hospitals participating received the three-star overall rating.

The cases analyzed for the ratings involved adult patients (18 or older) who underwent coronary artery bypass surgery at an STS-participating hospital between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014.

A total of 989 providers contributed data to the STS data warehouse for the purposes of this comparison. The society’s Adult Cardiac Surgery Database contains active participants from all 50 states as well as from Brazil, Israel, Turkey, Jordan and Australia.

Here’s what the three ratings assigned by STS mean:

    • One star denotes participant performance that is significantly lower than the STS mean.
    • Two stars denotes performance that is not statistically different from the mean.
    • Three stars recognizes performance that is significantly higher than the STS mean, and represents the highest category of quality.

Hospitals are graded on patient outcomes, and on use of recommended procedures and medications.

“This rating says a great deal about the superior quality of care we provide at Providence,” said Dr. E. “Mac” Leppard, one of Providence Hospitals’ Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgeons. “It says even more that we have received it every time the STS has issued its ratings. These numbers represent thousands of patients since 2006 who are alive and experiencing a good quality of life after having bypass surgery at Providence.”
