Providence Hospitals announces new executive leaders

Providence Hospitals and LifePoint Health today announced the appointment of executive leaders for the two-campus Columbia hospital system. Scott Campbell will assume a key leadership post serving as lead administrator for Providence Hospitals, and Phil Young will serve in a supporting role as lead administrator for the Northeast campus.

Campbell and Young will remain in these leadership roles until the completion of the acquisition of Providence Hospitals by LifePoint Health, which is expected to occur by February 1, 2016, pending approval from the Vatican, review by the Attorney General of South Carolina and the satisfaction of other customary closing conditions. At that time, Campbell will become market chief executive officer (CEO) of Providence Hospitals with Young serving as chief executive officer of the Northeast campus.

Campbell, a healthcare veteran who has held executive leadership positions for more than 30 years, joined LifePoint Health in summer 2015 and was assigned to serve as transition executive to assist with the acquisition of Providence Hospitals. Prior to that, Campbell was market CEO for a Florida-based health care system. Previously, he held various leadership positions for a publicly-traded Fortune 500 hospital company, serving in senior leadership positions for the company and as CEO for several affiliated hospitals. His experience includes leading the transition of a large Catholic hospital to an investor-owned system, where he successfully preserved and built upon a faith-based culture the hospital had fostered for 100 years.

Young, who will report to Campbell, is a seasoned executive bringing many years of experience in hospital leadership roles, including ten years with LifePoint Health. Most recently, Young served as market president for a four-hospital system in the LifePoint network. His previous experience includes serving as CEO for five community hospitals.

In addition, Mark Spafford has been named interim chief financial officer of Providence Hospitals. He will continue to serve in this capacity as a search is conducted to find a qualified, experienced candidate to fill this role on a continual basis in the future.
