Providence Orthopedic Hospitals appoints new medical directors

COLUMBIA, SC – Providence Orthopedic Hospital has appointed Thomas P. Gross, MD, to serve as Medical Director of Orthopedics and James A. O’Leary, MD, to serve as Medical Director for Sports Medicine.

Dr. Thomas P. Gross is a national leader in metal-on-metal hip resurfacing replacement, and is a specialist in joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee. Since 1994, he has developed a national referral practice in Columbia, South Carolina, for complex joint reconstruction problems. Dr. Gross led a multi-center FDA Study to bring metal-on-metal hip resurfacing replacement to the United States and also developed techniques for minimally invasive replacements that can require as little as a single night’s stay in the hospital. He continues to work on the development of new and improved replacement techniques and materials to produce smaller, stronger components implanted with less disruption to the patient.

Dr. Gross attended medical school and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Johns Hopkins University, where he learned from world leaders in medicine, surgery and joint replacement and developed an interest in complex joint reconstruction. Through a fellowship with Dr. William Bargar, he became an expert in custom implant design. Dr. Gross is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Columbia Medical Society, the South Carolina Medical Association, the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association, and the Southern Medical Association.

As Medical Director of Orthopedics, Dr. Gross will work with the hospital’s leadership to provide administrative oversight and service line implementations to the Providence Orthopedic Hospital community.

james_oleary_mid_biz_cropDr. James A. O’Leary is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons with added qualifications in Sports Medicine. He was elected President of the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association in 2011 and is the current South Carolina representative to the Board of Councilors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association, and the Piedmont Orthopaedic Society.

Dr. O’Leary is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. His internship was in general surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, where he also completed a residency in orthopedic surgery. Dr. O’Leary completed a fellowship in sports medicine and knee and shoulder surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania.
As Medical Director for Sports Medicine, Dr. O’Leary will work with physicians, physical therapists and trainers to develop and coordinate programs to deliver quality sports medicine to Columbia.
