Prysmian introduces AirGuard XP fiber cable for industrial and harsh environments

February 13, 2017

Prysmian Group, the world leader in the wire and cable industry, today announced the launch of AirGuard® XP fiber cable, a family of industrial and harsh environment fiber cables.

The latest addition to the AirGuard product offering, which includes low and medium voltage cables, AirGuard XP fiber cables combine world-class chemical and mechanical protection with user friendliness into one product.

“In industrial and harsh environments, the presence of aggressive chemicals such as hydrocarbons, solvents, acids and bases can destroy a fiber cable,” said Paul Baird, Prysmian’s AirGuard XP brand product manager. “With AirGuard, we have developed a product family that can resist those harsh elements, withstand a high level of impact and crush, and at the same time provide great flexibility and user friendliness.”

AirGuard XP goes head to head with interlocking armored cables in the metrics of impact and crush resistance. Interlocking armored cables add stiffness, weight and metallic elements that can be undesirable in some industrial applications. AirGuard XP provides a superior alternative in these situations as it overcomes these issues.

XPRLTM, one of the products in the AirGuard XP family has surpassed the rigorous UL 2556 requirements for oil and gas resistance. Meeting these high standards certifies the XPRLTM product’s long term reliability for application in harsh environments including oil refineries, chemical plants, oil fields and pipelines. In addition, its all-dielectric jacket construction offers premium mechanical protection from tensile and compression forces.

The robust, oil and gas resistant cable offers the following innovative features and benefits to end users:

  • Flame-retardant, chemical resistant, black UV-resistant outer jacket
  • Smaller and lighter than comparable metallic armored designs
  • Suitable for tray installations per NFPA 70
  • Suitable for self-support applications

“Having cables certified and listed to standardized oil and gasoline resistance tests ensures that the optical fiber cables meet the same standards required of electric cables,” said Brian Risch, Prysmian Group’s materials technology manager. “It removes any ambiguity about performance in harsh, chemical environments and ensures enhanced product reliability.”

Performance of the AirGuard XP products meets or exceeds additional industry standards such as GR20, CA C22.2 and ANSI/ICEA.
