Public invited to forum on proposed revisions to National Historic Preservation Act

October 25, 2026

Local residents, property owners, and community members are invited to attend a public forum on Tuesday, October 27, at 6:00 PM at the Georgetown Library to learn about proposed changes to the National Historic Preservation Act and how they could impact the Georgetown Historic District.

The National Historic Preservation Act, originally passed in 1966, requires federal agencies to evaluate potential impacts on historic sites before proceeding with federally funded, permitted, or managed projects. Proposed revisions currently under consideration could significantly alter this process by limiting public input and reducing the regulatory role of the State Historic Preservation Office.

The forum will feature a panel of local archaeologists and heritage professionals, including Jodi Barnes (SCDNR), Chris Judge (SCIAA), Eric Poplin (Brockington), Sara Rich (SCCCL), and Craig Sasser (Kinloch). They will discuss what is at stake for local historic structures, archaeological sites, and historic districts—specifically addressing how these legislative changes could affect community input, heritage tourism, and local development decisions ahead of the planned Congressional vote on November 9.
