Public invited to review updates to zoning requirements for Unity Park planning area

September 12, 2019

The City of Greenville and the Greenville Housing Fund will host drop-in style open houses for property owners and residents to review the latest draft of the Neighborhood District Code (previously called the Community Character Code) for the Unity Park planning area on Monday, September 16 and Tuesday, September 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room at Greenville Water (517 W. Washington Street). The same information will be shared at each open house and there will not be a formal presentation. As a result, the public is invited to attend the open house that is most convenient for them and to stop by any time between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

The Neighborhood District Code, which serves as the new zoning requirements for the Unity Park planning area, includes four elements: a regulating plan; permitted uses; building form standards and right-of-way/public space standards. The overall goal is to ensure that the Unity Park planning area becomes a walkable urban center that features cohesive design, use, densities and pedestrian amenities that create a vibrant, sustainable and complementary community character while protecting existing residential areas from inappropriate infill and redevelopment.

In addition to reviewing updates to the Neighborhood District Code, open house attendees will also have an opportunity to provide input on a strategy for affordable housing near Unity Park. More than eight acres of City-owned property near Unity Park have been reserved for affordable housing and at the open house, representatives from the Greenville Housing Fund will seek attendees’ guidance on a number of key issues, including the type, style and cost of the housing.

The draft Neighborhood District Code is available on the City’s website at www.greenvillesc.gov/UnityParkPlan.
