Public Meeting Scheduled To Discuss Ideas For Morrison Drive Corridor

July 25, 2014

CHARLESTON, SC – The City of Charleston is hosting a public meeting to discuss recommendations for urban development along the Morrison Drive corridor from 5:30-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1422 located at 1142 Morrison Drive.

The effort is part of the new Charleston Upper Peninsula Initiative, which is an innovative community planning and urban redevelopment effort on the Charleston peninsula.  The population on the peninsula is expected to increase; growth and development in the area is predicted to continue.  As outlined in the City’s plans, the area presents an opportunity for denser development to occur as it naturally transitions from its heavy industrial and commercial roots to modern workplaces, retail, restaurants and denser housing.

The City is very interested in hearing from residents, property owners and those who work in the area on these recommendations.  The Upper Peninsula Initiative encourages participation and commitments from the community in order to thoughtfully weave together community assets with creative ideas and innovative projects to build a strong sense of place and vibrant, lasting community.

Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. said, “The Upper Peninsula Initiative represents a fabulous opportunity to allow for the needed expansion of the peninsula’s employment base and opportunities for further residential and neighborhood retail development.  We look forward to working with the public as we further develop the plans for this area.”
