SPARTANBURG, SC – Is this the year you conquer Mt. Mitchell, by bike? Today, registration opens to the public for one of the Southeast’s most challenging and well-known uphill rides: the 103-mile Assault on Mt. Mitchell and its sister ride, the 74-mile Assault on Marion, scheduled for Monday, May 18, 2015. Riders may register online at www.theassaults.com.

The cost to enter the Assault on Mt. Mitchell is $135, which includes the participant’s transportation from Mt. Mitchell to Marion upon completion of the ride, post-ride bike transportation to participant’s desired destination (Marion or Spartanburg), a 40th Anniversary commemorative t-shirt, and post-ride meal. Registration for the Assault on Marion costs $40, which includes post-ride bike transportation to Spartanburg (if needed), a 40th Anniversary commemorative t-shirt and post-ride meal. Finishers of The Assaults will receive a special 40th Anniversary patch, as well as – for the first time ever – a commemorative medal.

With support of the cyclists and the 40th Anniversary Event Partners – Visit Spartanburg, Spartanburg Herald-Journal and Asheville Citizen-Times – The Freewheelers invest more than $165,000 annually to ensure that The Assaults will be professional, safe and exciting for all.

Approximately 1,300 cyclists participate in The Assaults each year, 42 percent of whom live within a 100-mile radius of Spartanburg, S.C. Fifty-eight percent of those who participate in The Assaults come from outside this radius and support the local economy through hotel, restaurant and retail patronage.

Proceeds from the 40th Anniversary of The Assaults will be used as grants given by The Freewheelers to non-profit organizations supporting bicycle safety and educational programming to cyclists of all ages throughout the Upstate.
