May 5, 2016

A new partnership between Pulcra Chemicals LLC in Rock Hill and Winthrop University will support students studying chemistry or conducting chemistry research.

During the 2016 Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE), Lisa Trunk ’76, ’91, managing director for HR at Pulcra, presented chemistry major Rayshon Ellis with the first Pulcra Chemical Scholarship and Research Fund. The new scholarship supports chemistry majors or students involved in chemistry research. Funds can be used for scholarships, research or student travel related to research or to present research at conferences. The partnership also may yield future Pulcra internship opportunities for students.

Trunk said that the company is “proud to support Winthrop’s students, their research and educational opportunities.” She added that the “high level of research conducted by Winthrop students is quite impressive.”

Ellis, a native of Gaffney, South Carolina, plans to earn his M.B.A. at Winthrop and work in the field of industrial chemistry. He said that he is honored and excited to be the first recipient of the Pulcra Chemical Scholarship and Research Fund.

“This scholarship means a lot to me, and it shows me that hard work does pay off,” said Ellis. He credits his mother, Danielle McDowell, and his chemistry professors with helping him succeed in his major.

Trunk said that Pulcra’s core values of “People, Partners, Planet and Profits” made creating the scholarship a natural choice.

“Establishing a partnership with Winthrop aligns with our values and demonstrates commitment to the community,” said Trunk.
