Relic Room to commemorate the Revolution as it was fought in South Carolina

January 15, 2022

More American Revolution battles were fought in South Carolina than in any other state.

Did you know that? Come out to the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum on Saturday, Jan. 29, for Revolutionary War Day to learn more.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering something for the entire family, from the serious history student to the merely curious.

Here’s what’s scheduled in the Education Room:

  • 10:00-11:00: Emily Geiger play, presented by Kathy Hart – This family-friendly dramatization, “The Spy Named Emily,” provides young guests with the opportunity to perform in the play and learn. Emily Geiger was only 18 years old when she was captured by the British. Unlike Nathan Hale, she managed to complete her mission.
  • 11:15-12.15: “The Patriot” – Dr. Anthony J. Scotti Jr., a history instructor at Midlands Technical College, will present a lecture on the film “The Patriot.” He will examine what it got right and wrong about the Revolutionary War in the South.
  • 12:30-12:45: 250th Anniversary, with Bill Davies – A presentation on upcoming events commemorating the Revolution in South Carolina.
  • 1:00- 2.00: Six Wars at Once – Dr. Jack Meyer will discuss the six wars the British were fighting at the same time. Besides the American colonists, they were up against the French in Europe, the Caribbean and India; the Dutch in Europe; the Spanish in Europe, the Caribbean, and America; and two separate principalities in India. The American Revolution was the only fight they lost.

In other parts of the museum, the following will be found:

  • 2:15 p.m.: Cowpens Battle – Toy soldiers will be laid out on a diorama in the Atrium depicting the field where the epic contest occurred. Follow the action as it occurred.
  • 3:15 p.m.: English Country Dancing – These elaborately choreographed movements were a key element at social occasions in the day. Learn how to be the life of the party, 18th-century style.

All day in the Atrium:

  • Touch table – You will be free to handle replicas of everyday ideas common in homes and military camps during the era.
  • Music of the Revolution – The sounds of drum and fife, presented by Dan Culpepper.
  • Quill pen writing.
  • Historic games.

Every American has something to learn from the conflict that got our country started, and the Relic Room’s special day will offer something for everyone.
