Residents encouraged to complete census survey during COVID-19 shutdown

With the COVID-19 outbreak keeping many indoors and the national census count also underway, residents with internet access are encouraged to complete the brief census questionnaire online as a way to follow social-distancing requirements.
In mid-March, many households received official Census Bureau mail with information on how to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone or by mail. Completing the survey by one of these methods also means fewer census workers must go door-to-door as the nation combats the public health crisis.
To encourage residents to complete the census, Richland County will hold a “Census Hour” on its social media platforms throughout April. Postings will remind residents to complete the survey and leave comments encouraging relatives and friends to do so, too.
Residents can participate in “Census Hour” weekdays from noon to 1 p.m. or 6 to 7 p.m. on the County’s social media channels:

The online effort is part of the “Richland Counts!” information campaign that aims to raise awareness of the 2020 Census. In addition to the Census Hour, Richland County also formed a Complete Count Committee to help promote the national count’s importance.
An accurate count in the 2020 Census is important, as it ensures proper representation in government and access to federal resources for services, such as Community Development Block Grants. Richland County administers these grant funds, which are awarded by the federal government, to assist low- and moderate-income residents. The census helps identify these needs.
The Census Bureau will send reminders to households that do not respond by the end of April. People who did not receive a mailing or need assistance completing the census survey may call the toll-free 2020 Census line at 844-330-2020.
